Irritable bowel syndrome

IBS Syndrome – How To Over Come The Embarrassment

There is nothing wrong with becoming embarrassed about your IBS syndrome. Getting over the embarrassment of IBS syndrome requires finding a way to learn from that embarrassment. Almost everybody has experienced a period of embarrassment about something.

Example 1

Suppose, for example, that an IBS syndrome patient by the need to carry around medication is embarrassed. Suppose that he or she then decides to leave that medication at home.

IBS syndrome sufferer could suffer an even more horrible embarrassment, if that IBS syndrome patient later had to contend with an irritated bowel, and that IBS syndrome patient lacked the needed medication.

The IBS patient should get over the embarrassment and resume carrying the needed medication. The patient’s embarrassment would seem less bizarre if the patient had learned a lesson from the embarrassing circumstances.

Instead of an embarrassment, holding on to a memory of a lesson, helps the IBS syndrome patient to get over his or her embarrassment.

Example 2

Suppose that a young man with IBS syndrome has been told to eat a bland diet. Suppose further that the same young man has many friends who enjoy eating very spicy food.

These friends always order the hottest dishes, whenever they eat out in a restaurant. These friends like to eat food from cultures that are known for their spicy food. Now IBS syndrome patient might want to avoid eating bland foods if he were in a restaurant with these hot-crazy eaters.

He might in fact be embarrassed by his bland diet. He might then try eating the sort of food that could trigger his IBS syndrome symptoms. His desire to keep away from an embarrassing food selection could lead to an embarrassing case of severe IBS syndrome.

This is another example of how one should seek to learn from an embarrassment. Little good can come from being embarrassed about the demands on a person who lives with IBS syndrome. Let it be a lesson, if one does become embarrassed; let it accustom the IBS syndrome patient to the peculiarities of life with IBS syndrome.

One man long-accustomed to living with IBS syndrome has written about the fact that his IBS syndrome often causes him to arrive late at a destination. He has learned not to be embarrassed by his late arrival.

This man has clearly found a way to get over being embarrassed about his IBS syndrome. He has discovered that nothing can be gained from becoming embarrassed.

He has chosen to expect others to understand the special situations in his life. He does not even give thought to feeling embarrassed about his IBS syndrome.

The above are just examples of the way that life with IBS syndrome can become embarrassing. The wise IBS syndrome patient proceeds through life using the knowledge gained from an embarrassing situation.
